About the Role
We're seeking an experienced Cancer Registry Abstractor to work remotely and play a critical role in abstracting and coding medical information from cancer patient records. As a Cancer Registry Abstractor 4, you'll work closely with our team to ensure compliance with guidelines and definitions set by the California Cancer Registry (CCR), Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results (SEER), California Cancer Surveillance Program (CSP) of Los Angeles County, and the UCLA Cancer Registry, as well as the Commission on Cancer.
Key Responsibilities
- Abstract and code medical information from cancer patient records in accordance with CCR, SEER, CSP, and UCLA Cancer Registry guidelines and definitions.
- Ensure accurate and timely data collection, analysis, and reporting to support cancer research and patient care.
- Maintain expertise in cancer registry operations, including data collection, coding, and quality control.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to resolve data discrepancies and ensure data accuracy.
- Stay up-to-date with changing regulations, guidelines, and industry standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance data quality and registry operations.
Essential Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you'll need:
- A strong background in cancer registry operations, including data collection, coding, and analysis.
- Proficiency in abstracting and coding medical information using CCR, SEER, and CSP guidelines.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with ability to work effectively with healthcare professionals.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment, with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software applications as required.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Previous experience working in a cancer registry or related field.
- Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) or equivalent.
- Knowledge of cancer surveillance and epidemiology principles.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) and other healthcare information systems.

Compensation and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range of $39.71 - $52.41 per hour, depending on experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package. Our union-represented role is part of the EX - AFSCME bargaining unit.
