What We Look For In a Middle School Reading Comprehension Tutor
• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of comprehension strategies including predicting, questioning, summarizing, inferring, and monitoring, plus text structure analysis, vocabulary-in-context skills, main idea identification, and evidence-based reasoning. Ability to explain how to determine theme, analyze point of view, and compare texts while preparing middle school students for reading assessments and academic text comprehension.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching active reading strategies, annotation techniques, and evidence-based response construction. Guides students through previewing texts, generating questions during reading, identifying main ideas and supporting details, making inferences from implicit information, and writing evidence-based paragraphs. Emphasizes metacognitive awareness of comprehension processes and connects reading comprehension to content area success.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with middle school reading comprehension standards and common challenges such as inferring unstated information, distinguishing main ideas from details, and comprehending complex sentence structures. Adapts instruction using think-aloud modeling, graphic organizers, and graduated text complexity to support middle school students at varying comprehension levels building toward independent academic reading.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
